Tattoo Choker DIY

Handmade Tattoo Chokers by me at:
Dust In Mouth

so recently i am obsessed with tattoo chokers. you now, those 90's kids accessories that EVERY cool kid had? yuppp. they are now making a come-back in a lot of harajuku looks.

but since they are not very mainstream these days, the prices on etsy, ebay etc are all jacked up to ridiculous amounts. and much as i was obsessed with it, i refuse to pay $35 for something that used to go for a dollar just cause of a fad.

so i decided to make my own. AND IT WORKED.

here is my take on the tattoo choker/bracelet/ring using fishing line. stuff that comes in 50m packs for $3.50.

sadly, i could not find lines in black. this reel has 10m of 5 colors. blue, red, green, yellow and clear. quite an awesome steal at $3.50. got it at the hardware store near my house.

the end product!

note that for a bracelet, it does stretch quite abit so a knot chain length of 8cm was sufficient for me. getting consistent tension and knot length is very important. else it ends up looking very messy and bleh.

if you just feel like buying them instead, do support me at:

  3. Omg thanks for this Diy! Sadly, I'm frustrating over on how to seal it(It keeps getting undone) Oh wells, great diy!

  4. hey! have you tried metal crimp beads? they worked well for me. the knots method need strong glue to seal it before you cut off the ends. metal crimp beads work best so far. (:

  5. I'm so obsessed with these. How much cord would you use for a necklace? I'm thinking about using rubber bead cord because I can't find fishing line.

    ReplyDelete
  6. with fishing line i use them quite liberally. 3-4 times the length of your necklace should be sufficient. would rubber cord hold its shape?

  7. Thanks! :)
The rubber cord seems to be holding up pretty well. Here's how my necklace turned out:

  11. Thank you for the tutorial! :D i've been looking for this for ages <3 may i know if i could use other beads instead of metal crimp beads? :)

  12. yuppp! anything that holds them together but isnt too bulky would be great. since the bracelet will be pressing against your skin, you wouldnt really want uncomfortable bits. (:

  14. thank you for this, helped me lots. to keep the knot tied I put a nail polish top coat and so far it has worked very well

  15. to have it hold together, just burn the tips. You can use a lighter so you don't burn yourself or hold it against the stove like I did. Dab your fingers in water (or lick them) and gently press the burned ends together, that should do it.
Remember that you don't want to burn the plastic! Just warm it enough so that both ends start to melt..

  20. you can put a bead on both the strings to end it and then burn the tip

  21. I occasionally got one from my mom's friend's daughter, and i like it very much. But I accidentally BREAK IT !! Since then, I tried to make one more by myself. now I finally found a tutorial on it!!!!!!(。・ω・。)

  22. i tried to make this by following your tutorial but i can't get the knots to stay in their shapes, how do you make them stay in their shapes? and thank you, this is a great tutorial!

    ReplyDelete

    1. i tied them and glued them with polish before snipping off the ends so the hardened polish will hold the knot in place. (:

    1. what is scoubidoo string? if it has some tension in it, it should be fine.

  29. hey! i really tried to do this but the fishing reel is not working... when i do the first little circle, and then the second one, everything gets destroyed because it just cant stay... which is the thickness of the reel you are using? thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. the thickness of the reel is size 14/ 14 point? im not too sure if that is fisherman talk but that is the rough translation on the packaging. (:

  31. If you burn the ends together should stay or use a hot glue gun

  33. omg you're a genius, i thought it the possibility but i couldn't nail if that type kind of string was really the same thing!!! omg !!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Guys or to mirukeki, I realised that there is a slight error to the knot. That is why some people are finding it very hard as it doesn't stay in shape. You actually need to slide the string you are making the knot with into the earlier loop. Here's a comparison to what im talking about and mirukeki's.

Some people on youtube have figured that out, you really started it all out tho

    ReplyDelete
  35. Please could someone tell me the thickness of the string? :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hi, the packaging states that it is size 14? im not too sure but it feels like normal fishing line. there are other diy-ers who use thicker string which worked fine too. i think the ability for the string to hold its shape is more important than the actual thickness (:
